Risk assessment template

Before implementing any type of international development / aid program it’s a good idea to identify all the risks you might face, and work out what you are going to do about them.

Risks to the program might include internal issues, such as the necessary resources not being available or corruption by staff. They may also include external issues, such as civil unrest or changes in government regulations. Many donors also now require you to submit a risk assessment as part of your proposal.

This simple risk assessment template will help you list and rate the risks to your program in a consistent way, and identify the actions you will take to minimise them.

This risk assessment template is appropriate when:

  • You need to describe the risks that might be faced when implementing a project and how you will mitigate them.
  • You need to prepare a risk assessment for a donor.
  • Your program is small / medium sized.

This risk assessment template is NOT appropriate when:

  • Your organisation or the donor has their own risk assessment template that should be used.
  • Your program is very large or complex.
  • Your program is operating in a very high risk location, such as a conflict zone (in this case you will need an assessment and plans that are more detailed).
